Christmas lights

Published: 12 December 2023

Since BGCBC stopped installing Christmas Lights through Nantyglo and Blaina. The Town Council has provided this service every year since 2000 to welcome our local people and visitors as Town Council feels it is very important. We are committed and thrive to make the towns feel as festive and fun is vital for our towns of Nantyglo and Blaina.

Each year since 2016 we invest in purchasing more low energy LED Christmas lights to enhance the main streets of Nantyglo and Blaina. In total we currently now have 3.5km of lights installed in the areas of the main Streets in Nantyglo and Blaina. However, unfortunately, Western Power have repeatedly denied us permission to put Christmas lights on any wooden poles. Consequently, this means we are very limited in where lights the Town Council can erect Christmas lights in Nantyglo, although we have installed lights displays at St Anne’s Church, Wesly Church, and on the area of the Community Centres well as planting, maintaining, and lighting the Christmas Tree on the Garn. Christmas lights have been erected on a number of shops and buildings within the High Street, Blaina Institute and the square.

Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council brought in a change of policy for 2023 regarding Christmas lights public liability insurance on lampposts. This has brought the Town Council some more issues regarding the installation of Christmas lights on lampposts throughout the main streets of Nantyglo and Blaina. The Town Council are continually reviewing all aspects of Christmas lights, which are very costly to purchase and erect and any comments or proposals are welcomed.
