Powers and Duties

The powers and duties of the Town Council are governed by: Legislation, Standing Orders and Financial Regulations. Regular activities of the council include.

Representation on:

Primary School Governors; Blaenau Gwent Council for the Disabled; Blaina Institute Trust Fund; Brecon Beacons National Park; Crime Prevention Panel; One Voice Wales; Unitary Authority
Liaison Committee and Nantyglo and Blaina Charter Group.

Respond to Consultation Documents:

Planning Applications; Local Regeneration Plans; Local Development Plan; Highways; Education; Health; Local Government (Wales) Measures and changes to local and national policy as proposed by the Wales Government.

Provision of:

Litter Bins; Public Seating; Christmas Lighting and Community Centre (Salem Chapel) in the High Street of Blaina. During 2006 the Town Council purchased Salem Chapel and jointly with Nantyglo and Blaina Charter Group successfully applied for grant aid to enable a complete refurbishment of the building.

Annual Events

The Town Council arranges an annual community award evening, where worthy members of the community are given a Mayoral Presentation, other events on the annual calendar include the Joint Primary Schools Talent Show; four individual Children’s Christmas Carol Services

Community Grants

Are made to: Pensioners Associations; Air Training Corps; Local Dance Clubs; Ebbw Fach Creative Arts; Disability Wales; Blaina Band; Blaenau Gwent Otters; Nantyglo Community Shop; Sports and Youth Organisations and many other deserving causes.
